Between Il Paese Alto and the Adriatic Sea

High above the mouth of the river Tronto lies Il Paese Alto, the original medieval centre of San Benedetto del Tronto. Around the 13th-century Torre dei Gualtieri, narrow streets and the abbey church tell the story of a settlement first recorded in the year 998.

Below, along the coast, one of Italy’s first seaside resorts grew from 1865 into the Riviera delle Palme: a 5-kilometre promenade lined with around 8,000 palm trees, one of the country’s most important fishing ports and an open-air museum on the southern pier.
